Tackle Your 2009 Marketing Plans

I need to get started on my 2009 marketing calendar. In fact, I should have started weeks ago. But, each day, something more urgent requires my attention. I get caught up in day-to-day tasks or I just procrastinate.

Why is it that our most important projects are often the first to be ignored or forgotten? For most of us, it's because the day-to-day tasks are easier to tackle. We know we can finish them within an hour and cross them off of our to-do list. We feel a sense of accomplishment.

The long-term planning projects may take weeks to complete - or they may never be complete, they will simply evolve. That timeline can seem daunting. So, we focus on the little things that steal time away from our important goals.

Since I need a little kick in the right direction, I thought I'd sketch out a strategy for how I plan to tackle my 2009 Marketing Plans.

Start with an Outline

Outlines are one of the best ways to get your mind around an idea. Much like building a house, a little framework can help provide the structure you need to fill in the important details. Plus, it gets your mind moving - and movement is good.

Break Your Plan into Smaller Pieces
Rather than sitting down at your desk and saying "OK, now I'm going to create my plans for next year", give yourself a break. Use your outline (from above) and focus on one part of your plan each day. This approach will keep you focused, and will prevent you from welcoming distractions.

Set Deadlines for Yourself

If you keep saying "one of these days, I'm going to work on my 1-year, 5-year, 10-year plans", you'll never do it. 1-year will pass and you'll still be saying the same thing. This is a busy time of year, both personally and professionally. You'll never find the time to plan - you'll need to make the time. Set daily and weekly deadlines to keep your plans moving forward.

Something is Better than Nothing

It's easy to wait for the perfect time to plan or for the perfect ideas to surface. Don't wait - just get started. Any plan is better than no plan at all. Take some pressure off of yourself and know that your marketing plans can (and should) evolve and improve throughout the year.

OK, I've said enough. Now it's time for me to act on my words. I wish you the best of luck with your 2009 marketing plans.

Take Care & Happy Thanksgiving!
