Moving Forward and Looking Back - We've Come a Long Way...
Here we are looking at the start of 2009. It's time for New Years resolutions, 2009 predictions and "year in review" articles.
2008 was a big year for news, not all good news, but certainly big news. Rather than rehash what happened this past year, I thought it would be fun to look further back in time. Regardless of how folks feel about the current economic situation, it's undeniable that we've come a long way over the past 100 years.
Here are some memorable events from the past*...
1908 - The first New Years Eve ball is dropped at Times Square in New York City
1910 - Halley's comet is photographed for the first time
1939 - Gone with the Wind premieres
1941 - After 14 years of work, Mount Rushmore is completed
1945 - Germany surrenders
1951 - Direct dial coast-to-coast telephone service begins in the United States
1955 - Rosa Parks refuses to sit at the back of the bus
1963 - Martin Luther King delivers "I have a dream" speech
1969 - Apollo 11 astronauts take man's first walk on moon
1969 - Sesame Street debuts
1972 - Nike Running Shoes hit the market
1977 - George Lucas releases Star Wars
1979 - Mother Teresa wins Nobel Peace Prize
1980 - CNN is launched as the first all news network
1985 - New coke is introduced
1989 - The Berlin Wall falls
1994 - 18-year-old Tiger Woods wins the Masters
1999 - Billions of dollars are spent worldwide on Y2K preparations
2000 - Y2K passes without widespread computer failures
2001 - Apple releases the iPod
2005 - YouTube goes online
2008 - Michael Phelps sets record for most Olympic Gold Medals won at a single Olympics, with 8 gold medals.
We've come a long way and have had some fun along the way. A rough day, week, or month is only a small blip on your overall timeline. The key is keeping everything in perspective. Make 2009 your best year ever.
